WoW Classic Thinks About Mega Realms, Are you excited about this?

The mood in WoW Classic could soon get rougher. At least if two developers are allowed to implement their idea and let realms compete against each other.

In addition to the retail version of WoW: Dragonflight, the various Classic variants of World of Warcraft are still very popular – even if they sometimes fluctuate. Many realms in Wrath of the Lich King Classic are now somewhat underpopulated. Therefore, the developers are thinking about merging some realms. But in the wake of this idea, two WoW developers also came up with an idea: Why not pit the largest Alliance and the largest Horde realm against each other?

What was said?

World of Warcraft's Senior Game Producer, Tom Ellis, took to Twitter to explain an interesting idea:

All right, so we took a look at the realms of Wrath Classic and thought about how we could steam them down a bit before the launch of Cataclysm, in mega realms like Season of Discovery. But while we were doing that, we realized that here is an opportunity that we are too afraid of to implement.

Faerlina-US and Benediction-US are fake PvP realms, with 99% of a faction on both. A horde and an alliance and almost the same number. [Josh Greenfield] and I desperately want to throw the two realms together and enable faction balancing.

What's the problem with the two realms?

In Wrath of the Lich King Classic, many realms have the suffix "PvP" only as a theoretical construct. Actual PvP doesn't exist on many realms. This is because the factions are endowed with a massive imbalance. For example, some realms have a Horde share of just under 99%, while others have a 99% Alliance share.

It's unlikely that this will really lead to PvP conflicts. If so, then it is probably more like a communal beating.

Is this a good idea?

That's exactly what the WoW developers aren't quite sure about either. Although Faerlina and Benediction are PvP realms by definition, there is basically no PvP taking place there. Therefore, Tom Ellis went on to explain:

The problem is that a very real number of people who have established themselves on these realms have never really wanted to be confronted with the reality of balanced PvP, and shaking it up now could make them leave.

For this reason, Ellis also asks the players of these two realms what they think of this idea.

Here's how the community is responding:

At least in the comments on X/Twitter, many seem to be in favor of this experiment.

  • "I started on Faerlina and then switched to Benediction because I always play Allianz. I want to do PvP, but it just doesn't exist. Personally, I'd love to see how this plays out, as long as PvE players get a free transfer to another PvE realm." – TirrinWoW
  • "Both realms should be PvP realms. Hopefully, most players on these realms will understand this. I don't see any reason why the two shouldn't be merged. It WILL be messy in the beginning. But with the balancing and more, I think it's going to be worth the stress in the long run." –Steve

However, many also believe that the idea of "War Mode" could be adapted from the modern World of Warcraft. Because then you could decide whether you want to participate in PvP battles or not, regardless of realm and community.

Is that how it comes?

Probably not. The developers themselves emphasize that the idea would shake up the "status quo" too much, although they find the idea interesting and therefore ask for feedback. If that's not going to be a permanent solution, then maybe it's something that could be tried temporarily.

Would you like to see these "mega PvP realms" where both factions are present in large numbers? Or do you think the current distribution with the dominance of one side is just right for Classic?
