Cyberpunk Legends: A Bold, Playable Story Deckbuilder

The tabletop gaming world is abuzz with anticipation for Night Crew Games’ upcoming cooperative card game, Cyberpunk Legends: Into the Night. Following a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign last year, which garnered $1.2 million and hit its funding goal in mere minutes, the game is quickly approaching its release. As someone drawn to immersive, narrative-driven deckbuilders, I recently had the opportunity to dive into a preview of Cyberpunk Legends, and it immediately stood out as one of the most promising tabletop experiences slated for 2026. This isn’t just another card game; it’s a deep dive into the iconic streets of Night City, challenging players to navigate intricate scenarios using an innovative poker-hand system. To learn more about this exciting title, we spoke with the team behind Night Crew Games about their vision and design journey.

We Spoke With Night Crew Games on Cyberpunk Legends

1) Tell me how Cyberpunk Legends evolved from concept into what it became in the end? What was the design journey like for it?

The initial spark for Cyberpunk Legends came from a personal need during the pandemic. Our lead designer, James Portnow, was searching for a cooperative campaign adventure card game that was quick to set up and easy to learn, something suitable for friends with busy schedules. Unable to find a perfect fit, his background in game design led him to develop his own prototype. This wasn’t originally intended for commercial release. The true turning point arrived when James was playing this prototype with Mike Pondsmith, the creator of Cyberpunk. It was Mike who saw the game’s immense potential and suggested transforming it into a full-fledged Cyberpunk product, which set Night Crew Games on the path to making it shelf-ready.

2) How much input and in what ways did Mike Pondsmith contribute to the game’s development or design?

Mike Pondsmith played a pivotal role in shaping Cyberpunk Legends. Beyond the initial suggestion to set the game in the Cyberpunk universe, he was actively involved throughout its development. Mike participated in numerous playtesting sessions, providing invaluable feedback that refined the gameplay experience. Furthermore, his entire team at R. Tal Games offered extensive support, especially regarding lore questions. They were instrumental in helping Night Crew Games accurately depict the very early years of the Cyberpunk timeline, ensuring the game feels authentic and deeply connected to the established universe. His insights helped ground the game firmly in the rich narrative world he created.

3) Explain the decision to go with Poker hands for the main game system? What about it made it the best choice for the game?

The choice to use poker hands for the core game system was driven by both design and thematic objectives. From a design standpoint, it was crucial to foster a strong social element in cooperative multiplayer. By having players contribute one card at a time to a shared poker hand, with specific rules for communication, it encourages constant interaction and even roleplaying, preventing any single player from dominating. This also ensures turns are quick and engaging for everyone. Thematically, poker perfectly embodies the essence of Night City: taking bold risks, gambling with what little you have, and striving to become a legend against all odds. An initial math-heavy system didn’t capture this visceral feeling, making poker the ideal fit.

4) When in the lore of Cyberpunk does this take place?

The narrative of Cyberpunk Legends’ first campaign is set in the distant future of… 2012. This might seem like an unconventional choice for those familiar only with later iterations like Cyberpunk 2077. However, for deep lore enthusiasts, 2012 is a profoundly significant year in the Cyberpunk timeline. It marks a period where many foundational events that resonate through history take place. Players won’t step into the shoes of famous characters like Johnny Silverhand; instead, they will carve their own path. Yet, fans of 2077 or Cyberpunk Red will recognize various elements and situations in Legends, realizing how their actions tangentially intersect with the most consequential moments in Night City’s turbulent history.

5) Can you go a bit more into detail into the “Build your adventure” mode that will be included in the release version along with any other modes of play that will be included.

We’re incredibly excited about the “Build Your Own Adventure” mode, though it’s important to note that the initial release will feature a beta version as a Kickstarter exclusive, with the full retail version planned for later. However, the core box will ship with another fantastic mode: a roguelike deckbuilder. After completing the campaign scenarios, players will open an “upgrade pack” containing rules to transform the game into this replayable roguelike experience. “Build Your Own Adventure” is essentially a set of “design legos” aimed at empowering players to create or modify their own unique runs and stories. It provides a scaffolding, helping people overcome the daunting blank slate of game mastering, allowing them to craft their own narratives within the Cyberpunk world.

6) Playing with 4 players last night was a lot of fun, but I’m curious how the game changes or balances itself with lower player counts and the smaller selection of cards in which the team can pull from to complete scenarios (20 possible cards with 4 players, but in a two player game you’d only have 10).

That’s an excellent observation, and it highlights a key aspect of our balancing! In Cyberpunk Legends, players contribute cards clockwise to “The Plan”—the poker hand used to overcome obstacles. With fewer players, each individual gains more direct influence over the hand’s construction, even with a smaller pool of cards. For example, in a 4-player game, only the designated leader contributes two cards; with three players, two individuals get this added control. This dynamic automatically balances the game, making new rules unnecessary for different player counts. For single-player mode, the system introduces a “merc” deck; you play two decks, but one’s actions are determined by flipping its top card, forcing you to adapt strategically to their unpredictable contributions.

7) Can you go into detail about the art design process for the game? The artists you worked with for the project, what did you feel was important to focus on, the aesthetic and feel you were aiming for.

Our art direction for Cyberpunk Legends prioritizes diverse artistic expression, contrasting with the often-homogenized look of some modern card games. We wanted artists to infuse their unique styles, resulting in a cohesive yet varied aesthetic reminiscent of early Magic sets, where you might see everything from psychedelia to art nouveau. This approach allowed for incredible creative freedom, particularly with elements like Cyberspace visuals, which are more abstract. We also aimed for a “sexy” portrayal of Night City, focusing on muscle, smolder, and dynamic characters without being overtly exploitative. Crucially, the art strives to capture the vibrant life and underlying hope in Cyberpunk—the edgerunners living fully, the promise of challenging the system, reflecting the world’s deep vitality amidst its dark undertones.

8) Have you guys worked with or are there any involvements with CD PROJEKT RED on this game?

Regarding collaboration, our primary partnership for Cyberpunk Legends has been with R. Tal, Mike Pondsmith’s team. Mike has been our consistent guide and go-to resource on the game development side, ensuring authenticity and a deep connection to the original source material. While CD PROJEKT RED, developers of Cyberpunk 2077, have been supportive and helpful in promoting the project, their involvement is more on the promotional front rather than direct game development or design input. Our core creative and lore-related collaboration remains firmly rooted with Mike and his team, who continue to be invaluable partners in bringing this vision to life.

9) Post Kickstarter delivery, what is the sort of release cadence you are hoping to have with this game system in the future?

After the initial Kickstarter delivery, we have ambitious plans for ongoing content to keep the Cyberpunk Legends universe thriving. Our goal is to release a new scenario every quarter, ensuring a fresh stream of adventures for players. Additionally, we aim to launch a completely new, full campaign each year, expanding the overarching narrative and introducing new challenges. Smaller, supplementary releases will also be peppered throughout the year to enrich the game experience. Of course, the full “Build Your Own Adventure” mode, once it’s completely polished and ready, will also be a major future release, empowering the community to become creators within Night City.

Having experienced even a sliver of what Cyberpunk Legends offers, it’s clear Night Crew Games is crafting something special. The ingenious poker-based mechanics, combined with rich storytelling, stunning art, and distinct character classes, create an incredibly engaging and replayable experience. The promise of an evolving roguelike mode and community-driven scenario building only adds to its appeal. For fans of deep narrative and cooperative strategy, Cyberpunk Legends: Into the Night is poised to be a standout title and a strong contender for your tabletop in 2026. This deckhead is more than ready for the full dive back into Night City.
