Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Claws of Awaji to Conclude Key Storylines
Assassin’s Creed Shadows aims to provide a substantial experience, with Ubisoft suggesting a 60-hour commitment to finish the main narrative. For dedicated players, save files might even surpass the 100-hour mark, highlighting the game’s expansive world and detailed missions for both Naoe and Yasuke. The title invites ongoing exploration, allowing players to unearth hidden details long after the main story has concluded.
Unresolved Threads in the Main Game
Despite its length, the narrative in Assassin’s Creed Shadows leaves several crucial plot points unresolved. Some mysteries remain open, such as the whereabouts of Naoe’s mother, and the location of the third and final mysterious box, an important element of the game’s core plot. Meanwhile, Yasuke’s quest to eliminate Templars is clearly just getting started as the credits roll. These lingering threads suggest the main game isn’t the full story.
Claws of Awaji: An Essential Expansion
The upcoming Claws of Awaji expansion, a 10-hour experience provided free to those who pre-ordered Shadows, directly continues the story. This marks a departure from past Assassin’s Creed DLCs, which often felt tangential. Claws of Awaji appears integral to the main storyline, significantly increasing the expectation for a meaningful continuation. It’s designed to pick up where the main game ends, providing closure on pending plotlines.
Ubisoft Bordeaux’s Collaborative Effort
Ubisoft Bordeaux, the studio behind Curse of the Druids (Valhalla DLC) and Assassin’s Creed Mirage, is crafting Claws of Awaji. Content Director Simon Arsenault explained the studio collaborated with Ubisoft Quebec to continue Naoe’s story and deliver resolutions. This close collaboration ensures that the expansion addresses fan expectations and provides a fulfilling conclusion to the unresolved narratives, particularly those surrounding Naoe’s family.
Naoe’s Personal Journey: Family and Mystery
Claws of Awaji sends Naoe to the island of Awaji, where she believes her mother, Tsuyu, is being held. There, she uncovers the truth about Tsuyu’s situation and learns about the final mystery box, setting the stage for the expansion’s adventure. The focus is on Naoe’s personal connections, offering a chance to explore her family history in a way the main game only touched upon. The expansion seeks to enrich her character by exploring her roots and parental relationships.
Yasuke’s Role: Shifting Dynamics
While the main focus of *Claws of Awaji* revolves around Naoe’s personal storyline, Yasuke is also present in the expansion. His journey to hunt down the Templars continues on, and he takes on a supporting role for Naoe. He provides emotional aid and helps her navigate the events unfolding in her life. The developer is shifting their dynamic as protagonists and putting them both on a single path together throughout the expansion.
A Deliberate Shift in Storytelling
According to Arsenault, the decision to include Naoe’s mother and the third box in the expansion came about organically through discussions between Ubisoft Bordeaux and Quebec. He stated that they wanted to add something personal to Naoe’s character to make her feel more real. Because the expansion takes place after the main game, Yasuke could even discuss the topic of his own mother with Naoe because he didn’t have the opportunity to before.
Hattori Hanzo’s Return and Potential Closure
The choice to feature Hattori Hanzo in Claws of Awaji further demonstrates the interwoven nature of the expansion with the main game. The expansion is meant to provide some closure for Naoe’s story, Arsenault explains that they are at least attempting to close out her personal narrative. He also stated that the writers could choose to write another arc for her down the road if the demand is there.
