Apex Legends Battle Pass revamp, community response.

Following a wave of negative feedback and overwhelmingly negative reviews on the Steam store, Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends, has announced adjustments to the Battle Pass system for Season 22. The initial changes, introduced on July 8th, faced significant backlash from the community. The modifications were deemed confusing and unfavorable, prompting Respawn to address concerns and make substantial revisions in response to the community’s criticism.

Initial Changes and Community Reaction

The initial Battle Pass overhaul introduced a split-season structure, meaning two Battle Passes per season, neither of which could be purchased with Apex Coins. This made it more costly for players to acquire the full Season rewards. The pricing structure also significantly increased. The consequence for players was that they were unable to use Apex Coins acquired during the previous Battle Pass in the following Battle Pass. Further complicating matters, the lack of specific details surrounding reward unlocking further inflamed the issue. This led to a surge of negative feedback, flooding the Apex Legends Steam page with overwhelmingly negative reviews.

Respawn’s Revised Approach

Responding to the community’s concerns, Respawn released an update on July 24th, introducing revised Battle Pass options. Crucially, the ability to purchase the Premium Battle Pass with Apex Coins was restored. The new approach introduces two tiers: Ultimate and Ultimate+. This shift acknowledges the community’s input regarding affordability and accessibility.

  • Ultimate: This tier mirrors Premium rewards but costs $9.99 and is not purchasable with Apex Coins. It includes eight Apex Packs and 1,200 Crafting Materials, as well as all the Premium rewards.
  • Ultimate+: The highest tier, Ultimate+, maintains the contents of Ultimate, but with an upgrade, doubling the Exotic Shards, offering two exclusive Legendary skin variants, an additional ten Battle Pass level unlocks, and the unlocking of every Legend in the game. This tier carries a price tag of $19.99 and remains inaccessible using Apex Coins.

Respawn’s Explanation

In an interview with iGV, Steven Ferreira, Apex Legends Game Director, addressed the rationale behind the changes. The core issue, according to Ferreira, was that the previous Battle Pass design didn’t effectively engage the majority of players throughout the entire season. Data analysis revealed low engagement with unlocked content. Respawn’s aim was to create a more accessible and engaging structure that allows players to unlock the coveted content more quickly within a more manageable period of time and with greater convenience and value.

Addressing Community Concerns Beyond the Battle Pass

Beyond the Battle Pass, Ferreira acknowledged player concerns about the overall state of the game, including issues with cheaters and game stability. He stressed that these concerns are not being disregarded, but rather are actively addressed through long-term development efforts. Respawn emphasized their commitment to transparency and promised to offer more detailed information about these ongoing initiatives in the future.

Future Communication Strategies

Ferreira expressed remorse over the lack of effective communication during the initial announcement. He highlighted the importance of future communication strategies, emphasizing greater community engagement in the development process. This includes utilizing existing channels, such as focus groups and season previews, to gather feedback on significant changes.

Striking a Balance Between Competition and Casual Play

Ferreira addressed the growing skill gap and the resulting alienation of casual players. He emphasized that Apex Legends will always be a competitive game, but Respawn is actively working to improve the game’s accessibility, potentially leading to significant changes to address the skill gap and help casual players have a more enjoyable experience. Key adjustments are anticipated for the next season.

Conclusion

Respawn’s response to community feedback signals a willingness to adapt and improve the player experience. The revised Battle Pass system, while maintaining a split-season structure, offers players more affordable options and a more user-friendly progression system. Respawn’s acknowledgment of concerns beyond the Battle Pass suggests a proactive effort to address ongoing community concerns and strive for better communication in future developments.
