Pros:

  • Powerful spells for both offensive and support roles
  • Ranged combat capabilities
  • Meditation ability for spell regeneration
  • Massive damage potential with accurate spellcasting

Cons:

  • Extremely low health and vulnerability to melee attacks
  • Reliance on accurate aiming for spell effectiveness
  • Limited options for close-quarters combat
  • High skill ceiling for optimal gameplay

Perks and Abilities

Perks

Wizards have a variety of perks to choose from, offering customization to your playstyle. Some notable perks include:

  • Quick Chant: Increases casting speed, enhancing spell flow.
  • Arcane Mastery: Boosts damage output and reduces cast time for key spells.
  • Arcane Feedback: Increases damage and casting speed with each successful arcane spell hit.
  • Reactive Shield: Creates a temporary shield that absorbs damage, offering defensive capabilities.
  • Sage: Boosts Knowledge, enhancing spellcasting potential.
  • Melt: Reduces enemy physical damage protection when hit with fire spells.
  • Ice Shield: Inflicts Frostbite on melee attackers and increases Armor Rating.
  • Mana Surge: Improves magic damage bonus.

For beginners, Reactive Shield and Quick Chant are recommended for improved casting speed and survivability. Arcane Mastery or Mana Surge can be chosen later for further enhancement.

Abilities

  • Spell Memory: Unlocks the ability to use spells in the dungeon. Spell Memory 2 provides additional spell tree access.
  • Meditation: Allows restoration of spells with a specific cost rate.
  • Intense Focus: Reduces the casting time of the next spell drastically.

Spell Memory is essential for utilizing spells in dungeons. Meditation complements this by allowing spell regeneration mid-run, making it a more valuable choice than the second Spell Memory ability. Intense Focus can be useful in specific situations, but Meditation offers more consistent value.

Which Spells Are for You?

Wizards have access to a range of spells, each with varying costs and effects. Spells are categorized into tiers based on their power level:

Tier 1: One Cost Spells

  • Ignite: Enchants a weapon with fire, providing damage buffs and burn effects.
  • Zap: A single-target lightning spell.
  • Light Orb: Illuminates a small area with lightning.

Tier 2: Two Cost Spells

  • Ice Bolt: Deals damage and slows target movement speed.
  • Slow: Significantly reduces enemy movement speed.

Tier 3: Three Cost Spells

  • Haste: Provides a movement speed buff for yourself or an ally.
  • Magic Missile: Fires multiple arcane orbs that deal damage.

Tier 4: Four Cost Spells

  • Fireball: An AoE fire spell that deals damage and knockback.
  • Invisibility: Makes the target invisible and grants increased movement speed.
  • Lightning Strike: Deals lightning damage in a small AoE after a cast time.

Tier 6: Six Cost Spells

  • Chain Lightning: A powerful spell that chains through enemies, dealing lightning damage.

Best Spells for A Beginner

Starting wizards have limited Knowledge Points, restricting spell selection. Here’s a recommended build for beginners:

  • Fireball: Strong AoE damage for crowd control.
  • Magic Missile: Reliable damage output for single targets.
  • Slow: Essential for controlling enemy movement.
  • Haste: Provides a movement speed boost for yourself or allies.

What Kind of Weapons Do Wizards Use?

While Wizards can wield various weapons, their focus should be on spellcasting.

  • Spellbook: Offers decent stats and doesn’t hinder movement speed. A priority item for wizards.
  • Staff: The starting weapon, but inferior to Spellbooks.
  • Crystal Sword: Not recommended for wizards.
  • Rondel Dagger: Only viable when paired with a Crystal Ball for melee combat, which is generally avoided by wizards.
  • Crystal Ball: Provides melee combat bonuses, but not recommended for wizards.
  • Crossbow: Not recommended for wizards.

Focusing on spellcasting and avoiding melee combat is the most effective way to play the Wizard class.

Knowledge Over Defense for Armor

Armor should prioritize Knowledge bonuses over Defense. Recommended armor options for wizards include:

  • Frocks: Basic robes that provide a decent Knowledge bonus.
  • Mystic Vestaments: Offer a stronger Knowledge bonus than Frocks.
  • Oracle Robes: Provide the highest Knowledge bonus among the listed options.

Prioritizing Knowledge over Defense allows wizards to maximize their spellcasting capabilities.

Master the Art of Spells

Becoming proficient as a Wizard requires understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each spell and mastering positioning for effective spellcasting. Constant practice and experimentation will allow you to develop a playstyle that suits your preferences and the challenges you encounter in the dungeons. Remember, knowledge is power, and mastering the art of spells is key to success as a Wizard in Dark and Darker.
