iGV Reviews Destiny 2: Lightfall

Season of Defiance

TieGuyTravis’ Destiny Rankings

Destiny 2: Lightfall is the latest expansion for the long-running looter shooter, and it’s a mixed bag. While the new Strand subclass and endgame activities are fun and challenging, the campaign story is a letdown and the destination of Neomuna is pretty bland. Here are some of TieGuyTravis’ Destiny rankings, where he compares each expansion in the Destiny franchise, starting with Destiny 1:

  • Destiny 2: The Final Shape (1)
  • Destiny 2: The Witch Queen (2)
  • Destiny: The Taken King (3)
  • Destiny 2: Expansion III: Forsaken (4)
  • Destiny: Rise of Iron (5)
  • Destiny 2 (6)
  • Destiny 2: Beyond Light (7)
  • Destiny: House of Wolves (8)
  • Destiny (9)
  • Destiny: The Dark Below (10)

These rankings are subjective and based on Travis’ own experience and preferences, but they offer a helpful overview of the different expansions in the series and how they stack up against each other.

A Stale Recipe

Lightfall feels like a step back from the impressive Witch Queen expansion. While there are definitely some things to enjoy, the overall experience is underwhelming, especially for long-time fans. The story is incoherent, the destination on Neptune is lifeless, and the endgame activities are full of deja vu. The campaign story is particularly disappointing. It’s a low-stakes diversion that draws you away from the real conflict happening on Earth. The writing is bad, with some of the characters being particularly cringeworthy. The story wraps up abruptly, leaving many unanswered questions. The campaign takes place on Neomuna, a city on Neptune. Neomuna is a visually appealing location with a cyberpunk aesthetic, but it’s also one of the least interesting destinations in Destiny. It lacks the sense of exploration and discovery that made previous destinations so memorable. Bungie continues to have a problem with “dead space” when creating environments, which is a noticeable problem in Neomuna, as it’s mostly full of empty buildings and enemies. Luckily, there are some redeeming qualities. The new Strand subclass is a fantastic addition to the Destiny sandbox. Strand is all about mobility and offers players some new and interesting ways to move around the world and engage with enemies. The new Tormentor enemy is also a welcome addition, as it brings some much-needed freshness to the sandbox. It’s a challenging and engaging enemy that provides a glimmer of hope for the future of the game. Lightfall also brings some quality-of-life improvements. The loadout system is a great addition that makes it easier to swap between different equipment sets. The new Guardian Rank system is also a welcome addition, as it gives players a roadmap for progression and a way to track their progress. However, the grind for Guardian Rank can be tedious and unnecessary. Overall, Lightfall is a mixed bag. It’s a step back from The Witch Queen, but it does have some redeeming qualities. If you’re a hardcore Destiny fan, you’ll likely want to check it out, but don’t expect a game-changer.

Has Lightfall increased or decreased your excitement about Destiny 2?

Destiny 2 has been on a roll for the last year, and the Witch Queen expansion was a huge success. With the arrival of Lightfall and the upcoming The Final Shape, the game is about to reach its climax, but it’s hard to say whether the hype is worth it. The campaign is very disappointing, but the new subclass is fun, and the new raid is challenging and engaging. What do you think? Did Lightfall increase your excitement for Destiny 2, or has it decreased your interest? Let us know in the poll below.
