Diablo 4 Endgame: Grindy & Repetitive

Light at the End of the Tunnel

I’ve been playing Diablo 4 for a while now. I’ve reached World Tier 4 and have been pushing Nightmare Dungeons with my level 85 Rogue. While the campaign was enjoyable, the endgame felt like a slog. I was excited to reach max Renown and collect all the Altars of Lilith, thinking that was the real start of the endgame. However, that turned out to be a false promise. The endgame, devoid of Renown and Altar objectives, felt incredibly tedious and unsatisfying.

The Illusion of Choice

One of the biggest disappointments was the illusion of choice. Blizzard heavily advertised the versatility of the Paragon Boards and skill tree system, claiming players could respec freely. However, the reality is far different. Refunding Paragon points and skill points can cost millions of gold, and respeccing an entire build requires a substantial investment in materials and gold. Unless you’re dedicated to farming multiple builds simultaneously, the reality is that you’ll scrap most of the items needed for a secondary build. This makes experimenting with different builds incredibly expensive and impractical, leaving many players stuck with their initial build, even if they don’t enjoy it.

The End-Game Needs Meaningful Progression

Diablo 4’s endgame suffers from a lack of meaningful progression. The game’s item power cap at 820 makes Nightmare Dungeons less challenging. The gear treadmill becomes non-existent. This leaves players with a repetitive and unsatisfying loop of grinding Nightmare Dungeons for minimal item upgrades. There’s no real challenge or incentive to experiment with different builds due to the cost of respeccing. The lack of more powerful unique items or challenging end-game content further amplifies this problem. Diablo 4 needs substantial improvements to its end-game to provide players with a fulfilling and engaging experience. This requires addressing the lack of meaningful progression, providing challenging content, and offering more opportunities for build diversification.

  • Introduce new endgame activities: Adding more challenging activities, such as new raid-like encounters or a more fleshed-out PvP system, would provide players with a new goal to strive for.
  • Increase item power cap: Raising the item power cap would give players a tangible goal to work towards and make the gear treadmill more engaging.
  • Rework the respec system: Making it easier and cheaper to respec skills and Paragon points would encourage players to experiment with different builds.
  • Introduce more powerful unique items: Creating build-defining unique items that offer significant advantages over standard legendary items would give players a reason to keep farming.
  • Add more challenging end-game bosses: Implementing more Uber-bosses or unique encounters that require specific strategies and team coordination would provide a sense of accomplishment and challenge.

In its current state, Diablo 4’s endgame feels uninspired and repetitive. It lacks the depth and complexity of previous Diablo titles. The game needs to offer players a clear path to meaningful progression and a variety of engaging endgame activities. Without these changes, Diablo 4’s endgame will continue to be a tedious and unrewarding experience for many players.
