Last Epoch: Picking Your Perfect Class

Last Epoch Guide: How to Choose the Best Class to Play in Last Epoch

How Do Classes Work In Last Epoch?

At the start of your Last Epoch adventure, you’re presented with five distinct base classes. Each class boasts a unique set of skills and passive abilities which can be upgraded as you level up your character. The true depth emerges once you progress through the campaign to unlock a Mastery. Masteries significantly alter the way a class is played, changing the core mechanics and strategies used during combat.

Masteries unlock a dedicated skill tree full of passive benefits and brand-new active skills to use. Choosing your mastery represents a major commitment as these selections are permanent, solidifying your character’s identity. Selecting the right mastery is key to success.

Best Class to Play at First in Last Epoch

Determining the “best” class depends on your play style preference, but for new players, certain classes offer a smoother learning curve and strong early-game performance. Consider what you enjoy in an ARPG. Do you prefer ranged attacks, melee combat, or summoning minions? Your desired style will influence your class selection. Some classes are easier to gear than others, too. The following sections will give you an overview to help you get started.

Mage

The Mage class is known for its potent elemental spells and strategic options for both offense and defense, making it an appealing choice for newcomers. Mages utilize powerful magical abilities to devastate enemies from a safe distance. They offer varied builds centered around different elemental damage types, creating distinct gameplay experiences.

Mage masteries grant them access to even greater magical control, allowing players to tailor their builds to specific strategies. These masteries offer distinct playstyles that can be customized. With the right build, Mages can excel in the endgame, providing diverse options for ranged combat strategies. This versatility is a great strength of the Mage class. They have options that scale well with gear and investments as you progress.

Sentinel

The Sentinel stands out as a sturdy and versatile class, characterized by high survivability and access to powerful melee skills. Sentinels have access to a wide array of weapons and skills, allowing them to adapt to various combat scenarios. A large health pool means they can take more punishment than other classes.

Consider the Paladin Mastery if you want a very versatile character. Choosing the Paladin opens up a plethora of build opportunities, encompassing melee, spell-casting, and even ranged combat styles. It is a great choice for exploring the game mechanics and figuring out your preferred play style. While you have to reach level 17 to choose the Paladin Mastery, use this time to familiarize yourself with the Sentinel class and its fundamental skills.

Rogue

The Rogue class is centered on nimble movement, ranged attacks, and debilitating effects. This makes it a fun, active choice for new Last Epoch players. Rogues are adept at utilizing ranged weaponry, particularly bows, to strike from a distance and maintain a safe position during combat.

Despite the emphasis on ranged combat, Rogues also possess a range of other skills to help take down enemies from afar. Stealth abilities like Smoke Bomb, along with mobility skills, allow Rogues to evade danger and reposition themselves strategically. The Rogue is very mobile and a lot of fun to play. Their poisons erode enemy health.

Acolyte

The Acolyte is for those who are drawn to the dark arts, curses, and commanding undead minions. These characters can become formidable necromancers, blood magic wielders, or spell casters. They offer strategic, dark-themed gameplay and distinct playstyles. The Acolyte class is known for its focus on damage-over-time effects, minion management, and draining enemy life.

The Acolyte has some interesting options, whether you prefer to command an army of skeletons as a Necromancer, harness the power of blood magic as a Lich, or unleash curses and dark spells as a Warlock. The Acolyte’s specializations present dark and strategic gameplay that revolves around weakening enemies and dominating the battlefield. Minions and persistent effects are hallmarks of this class.
