LEGO Animal Crossing: Timmy & Tommy Set Review

LEGO Animal Crossing Timmy & Tommy’s Fun Day Out Is Easily the Best Animal Crossing Set So Far

For those of us who deeply enjoy life simulation games, the world of Animal Crossing holds a special place. It’s a series where friendships bloom, islands are transformed, and familiar faces become beloved companions. Among these characters, Timmy and Tommy Nook are always hard at work, often seen behind the counter of Nook’s Cranny. While their dedication to business is commendable, LEGO’s newest Animal Crossing set, Timmy & Tommy’s Fun Day Out, offers a refreshing glimpse into their leisure time. This delightful set truly embodies the relaxing spirit of the game, setting a new standard for Animal Crossing LEGO adaptations. With its thoughtful design and engaging build, it provides a cohesive experience that other sets simply haven’t matched.

A Cohesive Slice of Island Life

As a huge fan of Animal Crossing, I’ve always appreciated the diligent work of Timmy and Tommy. They are the true backbone of island commerce, consistently manning the general store and assisting players in developing their homes and communities. This LEGO set, however, steps away from their retail duties to imagine a well-deserved day off. It perfectly captures a peaceful moment, inviting builders to create a tranquil scene. Comprising 513 pieces distributed across five distinct bags, the set promises a varied and engaging construction process. From the moment you unbox it, you’re drawn into a world where these iconic tanukis can simply enjoy the outdoors, embodying the very essence of a relaxed island existence.

Unboxing and Initial Impressions

The first thing that stands out about this set is its remarkable box design. Unlike some generic LEGO packaging, this one truly radiates the Animal Crossing aesthetic, making it something you’ll want to keep. Inside, you’ll discover a small sheet of stickers, which is often a source of minor frustration for LEGO enthusiasts. However, I was relieved to find that all the crucial details for Timmy and Tommy themselves are pre-printed, preserving their authentic look. The instruction booklet quickly dives into the building process without much preamble, which felt a little quick given the twins’ intriguing backstory that remains somewhat mysterious in the games. Despite this, the quality of the components and the vibrant presentation immediately signaled a promising and enjoyable build ahead.

Building the Tanuki Twins

To my surprise, the initial steps involve constructing Timmy and Tommy themselves, a departure from many LEGO sets that often save key figures for later. This allows you to immediately interact with the beloved characters. The designers have cleverly differentiated the twins: one features open eyes, while the other has closed eyes, which is a subtle yet effective way to tell them apart since in-game methods are not practical here. They come with charming accessories like fish food, a fishing rod, and a tiny flag, ready for their fun day. I found it amusing how many pieces go into their heads compared to their bodies, making them feel like adorable bobbleheads. Yet, they are surprisingly poseable, offering more dynamic display options than expected, a feature I truly appreciate.

Foundation and Hidden Treasures

Once the twins are assembled, the build progresses to creating the landscape’s foundation. One of my favorite interactive elements is the swirling fish in the water, which, despite requiring a sticker, can actually spin. This tiny detail instantly brought to mind the satisfying fishing sound from the game. The base also thoughtfully includes two hidden spots beneath the grassy areas. While one is specifically marked for the included miniature fossil, the second provides a perfect secret compartment for other small items, like the fish food, ensuring tiny accessories don’t get lost. This clever incorporation of hidden elements truly echoes the discovery aspect inherent in the Animal Crossing games, adding an extra layer of playfulness to the set.

Crafting the Iconic Bridge

Building a bridge marks a significant milestone in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, representing progress and connection within your island community. This LEGO set allows you to construct a charming bridge that is aesthetically far more pleasing than the basic starter bridges in the game. It features elegant bannisters that add a vibrant splash of color, enhancing its overall appeal. While the in-game equivalent, like the red zen bridge, requires a hefty investment of Bells and effort, this LEGO rendition offers instant gratification and a visually striking element to the scene. The process of assembling the bridge is engaging, providing a solid structure that ties the two halves of the scenic build together beautifully, symbolizing unity and natural beauty.

Delightful Details and Accessories

The final touches of this set are where many of its charms truly lie. A standout feature is the balloon present, which faithfully replicates the in-game floating gifts. This miniature present can open and close, revealing a tiny LEGO representation of Bells inside, a clever nod to the game’s currency system. Additionally, the set includes a vibrant blue butterfly, enhancing the natural appeal of the scene. Both the balloon present and the butterfly are attached to the set using transparent rod pieces. While these elements can sometimes feel flimsy, here they are effectively used to create the illusion of flight and movement. The balloon’s rod is cleverly positioned to be hidden behind Timmy and Tommy, maintaining a clean look, while the butterfly can be artfully placed among the flowers.

Why This Set Shines Above the Rest

Despite a few minor quibbles, I can confidently state that LEGO Animal Crossing: Timmy & Tommy’s Fun Day Out stands out as the best Animal Crossing-themed set released to date. While other sets based on the simulation game often present fragmented scenes or random island sections, this one offers a remarkably cohesive and complete diorama. It genuinely captures the cozy and relaxing atmosphere that defines Animal Crossing. This set provides a perfect balance of building enjoyment and display value, creating a scene where Timmy and Tommy are visibly enjoying the peaceful island life that we, as players, seek to build. It’s more than just a collection of bricks; it’s an invitation to unwind and appreciate the simple joys, compelling me to revisit New Horizons and further enhance my own island.
