Miyazaki: Elden Ring Not Ideal Fantasy RPG

Are You Ready to Play Shadow of the Erdtree?

Despite the universal acclaim it has received, Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki believes it isn’t quite the “ideal fantasy RPG” he envisions. While speaking to PC Gamer, Miyazaki shared that Elden Ring is a stepping stone towards his ultimate vision.

FromSoftware’s Journey Towards the Ideal Fantasy RPG

Miyazaki acknowledges that Elden Ring is a significant advancement in their quest to create the perfect fantasy RPG. It is a culmination of the lessons learned from previous titles like Demon’s Souls, the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

“Back when doing interviews about Elden Ring, I think I mentioned that I’m still in the process of making my ideal fantasy RPG,” Miyazaki said. “While Elden Ring is not quite it, it’s pretty close. It’s getting close.”

Miyazaki’s Perspective as a Creator

Miyazaki’s perspective as a creator presents a unique challenge in achieving his ideal. He admits that knowing the game’s intricacies and outcomes hinders his ability to experience it with the same wonder as a player.

“I think one thing that’s not necessarily missing, but makes it difficult to achieve my ideal, is that when I play it, I know everything’s going to happen,” Miyazaki said. “I already know everything that’s going on. So in terms of enjoying the game from a player’s perspective, I’d love to not know that, and for somebody else to make my ideal fantasy game, please, if possible. Then I can enjoy it just as a player.”

Shadow of the Erdtree: Expanding the World

The upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, launching on June 21, 2024, will provide players with the opportunity to explore new depths of Elden Ring’s world. It promises additional maps, stories, bosses, and items, all contributing to the game’s already rich lore.

Preparing for the Expansion

Accessing the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will require players to complete specific in-game achievements, including defeating two optional bosses. The challenge adds a layer of intrigue and excitement for seasoned players looking to delve deeper into the world of Elden Ring.

A Cultural Phenomenon

Elden Ring’s immense popularity cemented its place as a cultural phenomenon in 2022, captivating players with its challenging combat and expansive open world. Fans eagerly await the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, anticipating the expansion’s potential to unlock even more secrets and stories within the Lands Between.

Looking Ahead: FromSoftware’s Vision

While Miyazaki acknowledges Elden Ring’s achievements, his unwavering pursuit of the ideal fantasy RPG fuels FromSoftware’s future endeavors. The next games they create will likely build upon the foundation laid by Elden Ring, incorporating new elements and further refining their vision. As fans, we can only anticipate the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.
