How to Capture in Monster Hunter World
Tranqs and Traps
Successfully capturing a monster in Monster Hunter World hinges on the right tools. Tranquilizers, or “tranqs,” come in various forms, like bombs for melee users or ammo for gunners. Different tranqs affect monsters differently; some are more effective than others. Traps, such as Shock Traps and Pitfall Traps, are essential for stunning and safely containing the monster during the tranquilizing process. These tools are usually readily available in quests requiring capture, otherwise, stock up on them for future hunts. You can find them in the Provisions stockpile, or craft them, needing materials like Parashrooms, Sleepherbs, Trap Tools, Thunderbugs, and Nets.
Capturing the Monster
Hunting a monster for capture isn’t significantly different from a standard hunt. The key is recognizing when the monster is vulnerable. Look for signs of injury—limp or weakened movements, followed by retreating to a resting area. This is the opportune moment to act. Using the appropriate trap, either a pitfall or a shock trap, effectively positions the monster for capture. A Ghillie Mantle, if appropriate, can be used for sneaking around. Quickly switch to your tranquilizing weapon, deploying them decisively when the trap activates. Remember that some monsters require multiple tranq shots, so be prepared to reload. Once the monster faints, you’ve successfully captured it and it will be taken back to your camp.
Capturing Smaller Critters
Catching smaller creatures in the wilds of Monster Hunter World is achieved with the Capture Net. Find the creature in your inventory, equip the net, aim, and fire. The range on the net is limited, so getting close is necessary. Monitor the net’s indicator as you get closer; it will illuminate orange when you’re within range. Use stealth techniques, like the Ghillie Mantle, or the X/A button for stealth movement, to avoid startling the creatures. They often flee if you get too close. Captured smaller creatures can be taken back to your camp to become adorable and helpful pets. You can then feed them once they are safely housed with your household.
Capture Vs. Kill: Which is Better?
There’s no single “better” method between capturing and killing monsters in Monster Hunter World. The optimal choice depends on your specific goal. The loot from a captured monster, and a killed monster, are identical. When it comes to loot, both strategies give the same chances of obtaining rare items. However, if your main priority is getting specific parts, killing might provide a more reliable and controlled way of dismantling the body for parts. Breaking down body parts in a live monster is difficult, because the monster moves while you are trying to carve. Capturing is more efficient for gathering materials in a single hunt if your priority is to gather more materials; a single capture can yield more overall materials than a kill. Ultimately, the best approach is whichever one best suits your current game goals and the type of monster you are dealing with.
