The Phantom Muspah boss, an exciting new challenge for Old School RuneScape players, arrived on January 11th, accompanying the release of the Master-level quest, Secrets of the North. To unlock this formidable foe, adventurers must first conquer the quest itself, which demands high skill levels, including 69 Agility, 64 Thieving, and 56 Hunter. Furthermore, a series of prerequisite quests like Making Friends with My Arm, Devious Minds, and Hazelmere’s Cult, plus The General’s Shadow miniquest, must be completed. A combat level of 85 is generally recommended to tackle the quest content.
What to Expect
Players first encounter a weaker version of the Phantom Muspah, known as the Strange Creature, during the Secrets of the North quest. While a good introduction to its combat style, this initial skirmish doesn’t fully represent the challenge posed by the true boss. Once the quest concludes, the more powerful Phantom Muspah becomes accessible for repeated fights in a dedicated instance. Preparing for this stronger adversary is key.
Reaching the Phantom Muspah requires an Icy Basalt teleport, which can be conveniently integrated into a player-owned house’s Portal Nexus or Portal Chamber without any specific Magic level. Upon arriving in Weiss, a path opens up: traverse the shortcut near the herb patches, head east, slip through a fence, and descend. After passing the first door, proceed north where previously blocked rubble now allows passage. Finally, use the familiar instance door from the quest to confront the fully powered Phantom Muspah, ensuring you are adequately prepared for the heightened difficulty.
Weaker Than Vorkath?
Prior to its release, Jagex set specific expectations for the Phantom Muspah, stating on November 17th, 2022, that it would offer a greater mechanical challenge than Vorkath, but with generally lower statistical power. Their aim was to create a boss that demanded more player focus on mechanics without being overly punishing in raw damage or defenses. The statement described it as “a slightly more mechanical version of Vorkath but with lower stats,” implying players could “shred through the boss much easier.”
However, players’ initial experiences sparked debate regarding this promise. While Vorkath remains a stationary target, the Phantom Muspah’s constant movement and mandatory prayer switching between its attack forms introduce a dynamic layer of complexity. This mobility and the need for quick, adaptable responses certainly elevate its mechanical demands compared to the “beasty blue boi.” The question then shifted from whether it was more complex to whether its stats truly made it easier, as many found the fight surprisingly robust despite the developer’s pre-launch comments.
Stats
When comparing the raw health pools, the Phantom Muspah presents a substantial challenge with 850 total hitpoints, exceeding that of Vorkath. This larger health bar is further complicated by Muspah’s unique shield mechanic, which temporarily halts all incoming damage, effectively extending the duration of the fight and requiring specific strategies to overcome. Both bosses also incorporate healing mechanics that punish player errors.
For Vorkath, standing in its acidic pools allows it to regenerate health, while the Phantom Muspah has its own ways to regain hitpoints, notably tied to its spike attack phase and during its shield activation. These healing elements mean that sustained damage output and careful positioning are crucial for both encounters. The combination of a higher base HP and an intermittent invulnerability phase ensures the Phantom Muspah offers a prolonged and strategic battle, requiring players to adapt beyond simply dealing high damage.
Defense
In terms of defensive capabilities, the Phantom Muspah holds its own against Vorkath. While Vorkath boasts a Defense level of 214, the Muspah is not far behind with a formidable 200 Defense. Both creatures also share an identical Magic level of 150. This close parity in key defensive stats suggests that Vorkath’s primary advantages in overall resilience stem from its higher Attack, Strength, and Range levels rather than a massive difference in core defensive abilities.
The Phantom Muspah’s specific defensive bonuses further illustrate its tankiness across various combat styles:
- +185 Stab defense
- +134 Slash defense
- +120 Crush defense
- +437 Magic defense
- +56 Ranged defense
Notably, its Magic defense is exceptionally high. During the initial launch, players found it incredibly difficult to consistently freeze the boss, a critical strategy for many. Recognizing this imbalance, Jagex swiftly implemented a change on January 12th, increasing the accuracy of ice spells by 10% when the boss was not frozen, making the encounter fairer. Despite this adjustment, maintaining successful freezes against the Muspah remains a demanding task, highlighting its robust defenses.
Offense
Turning our attention to offensive capabilities, the Phantom Muspah presents a distinct threat profile. While Vorkath is renowned for its high ranged damage output, the Muspah brings a powerful magical arsenal to the fight, complemented by solid melee and ranged attacks. The situation isn’t necessarily “better” in terms of ease, as the Muspah’s varied attack styles demand constant prayer and gear switching, keeping players on their toes.
Here’s a detailed look at the Phantom Muspah’s offensive stat bonuses:
- +393 Attack
- +11 Strength
- +280 Magic
- +180 Magic Strength
- +64 Ranged
- +6 Ranged Strength
The standout figures here are its significantly high Magic and Magic Strength bonuses, indicating its primary damage source. Players must respect these numbers and consistently pray protect from Magic to mitigate substantial damage. Its ranged attack, while less potent than Vorkath’s, is still a notable threat, and the occasional melee hit can also prove costly if not properly managed, adding to the boss’s overall offensive pressure.
Harder Than Expected
The Phantom Muspah, upon its release, quickly established itself as a far more formidable opponent than many players, myself included, had initially anticipated based on Jagex’s pre-launch statements. While the mechanics are indeed intricate and require engagement, the true difficulty seems to stem more from the boss’s unexpectedly high defensive and offensive statistics rather than just the complexity of its attack patterns. Despite being intuitive and relatively quick to learn, the fight demands unwavering focus and significant resource investment.
Players often find themselves spending considerable time maneuvering around the arena, avoiding attacks, and managing the boss’s various phases, particularly its powerful shield and spike mechanics. This intense engagement frequently leads to consuming a full inventory of prayer potions, various food items, and stamina potions to maintain movement and combat effectiveness throughout the fight. The combination of high health, robust defenses, and potent offense creates a challenging solo encounter that pushes players to their limits, proving to be a much tougher experience than just a “mechanically complex, lower stats” version of Vorkath.
