Outer Worlds 2: All the Big Reveals

The Outer Worlds 2 Direct: Everything Announced

Obsidian Entertainment recently showcased a comprehensive look at the upcoming The Outer Worlds 2. The presentation, dubbed “The Outer Worlds 2 Direct,” offered a deep dive into the game’s mechanics, story elements, and overall improvements over its predecessor. Hosted by comedian Ben Schwartz, the event kept things light while revealing substantial details about this highly anticipated sequel, now slated for release on October 29, 2025.

Exploring Space as an Earth Directorate Agent

In The Outer Worlds 2, players will step into the boots of an Earth Directorate Agent. Obsidian envisions these agents as problem-solvers, venturing into chaotic locations to “fix everything that’s wrong.” The player’s journey begins by shaping their character through choices like Background and Traits, which will set the stage for how they approach the game. These foundational choices heavily impact the gameplay experience.

  • Backgrounds: Define your character’s past, influencing their starting skills and dialogue options.
  • Traits: Determine your character’s strengths and weaknesses, shaping how they interact with the world.

Skills have been refined, and Perks, heavily inspired by Fallout: New Vegas, offer diverse gameplay enhancements. For instance, the “Assassin” perk grants a movement speed boost after a stealth kill, encouraging strategic play.

More Guns, More Choice

The Outer Worlds 2 takes the foundation of the first game and expands upon it with numerous gameplay improvements. One of the most significant enhancements is the arsenal of weapons, featuring new animations and unique traits. One such weapon is “Rookie’s Reward,” which levels up alongside the player, celebrating each milestone with a festive confetti and fireworks display. Another example is the “Pop-Up Gun”, which deploys a drone that projects pop-up ads to distract and confuse enemies.

  • Diverse Weaponry: Explore a vast collection of firearms with unique effects.
  • Throwables: Science grenades can suspend enemies in zero gravity.

Movement has been overhauled, allowing players more freedom to run, jump, slide, and parkour. Moreover, the game includes both first-person and third-person perspectives, offering players the flexibility to experience the game as they prefer.

Flaws Are Back and Better (and Worse) Than Ever

The Flaws system returns in The Outer Worlds 2, offering players the opportunity to acquire negative traits in exchange for perk points. This system introduces new layers of challenge and customization to the gameplay experience. Several flaws were showcased during the Direct, including:

  • Bad Knees: Increased movement speed but loud joint popping while leaving a crouching position.
  • Kleptomaniac: Higher selling value for stolen items but occasional involuntary theft.
  • Sungazer: Permanent vision damage but daytime healing and increased weapon spread.
  • Overprepared: Increased magazine size but penalty when clip organically runs out of ammo.

These Flaws provide trade-offs that add depth and humor to the character building process, encouraging players to carefully consider the risks and rewards of each decision.

Factions and Companions

The Outer Worlds 2 is teeming with various factions and characters who will either aid or hinder the player’s journey. The Protectorate, for example, is an authoritarian regime within the isolated colony of Arcadia. Their societal model revolves around trading personal freedom for security and luxury.

“Their dictatorship is thematically based around the question of how much freedom people will give up for security and luxury. For Protectorate subjects, unfortunately, that answer is ‘everything.’” – Obsidian Entertainment

The Order of the Ascendant, a spin-off from the Order of Scientific Inquiry from the first game, also plays a significant role. Factions are intricately linked to the overarching story and themes of The Outer Worlds 2, with added humor. To further enhance immersion, the game will feature a radio system inspired by Fallout: New Vegas, with stations broadcasting original songs from each major faction.

Companions have also been given substantial attention. Players will meet Niles, an Earth Directorate agent, and shape his story through their actions. Other companions include Val, an automech drone that helps Niles, Marisol, a deadly assassin and mathematician, Aza, a cultist, Inez, a combat medic, and Tristan, a heavily armored Protectorate arbiter.

The Bridge

Obsidian emphasizes player choice throughout The Outer Worlds 2. An early mission, “The Bridge,” exemplifies this philosophy. Players must find a way to lower a bridge, with options ranging from convincing the Protectorate, sneaking into the control room, or engaging in direct combat. Players can use a shield that protects against poison gas to get around dangerous areas, or jump boots that offer more traversal options. There’s even the drastic choice of sacrificing a companion to gain bridge clearance. This level of freedom will be present throughout the game. The team is very excited and says that “The Outer Worlds 2 is really the biggest game we’ve ever made.”
