What is the Terastal Phenomenon?
A captivating new mechanic, Terastallization, graces Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. This phenomenon, unique to Paldea, imbues Pokémon with a dazzling jewel-like glow and alters their type, offering a compelling strategic layer to battles. This transformation isn’t tied to a Pokémon’s species or usual type; a Pikachu can be Terastalized into Ground, while another could be Fairy. Essentially, every Pokémon possesses a latent Terastal Type.
The Terastalized form is visible via a “Tera Jewel” that emerges from the Pokémon’s head, in various shapes depending on the Tera type. This transformation empowers the Pokémon with a “Tera Type” for the duration of the battle, which can be one of its existing types, or a completely new one. Importantly, activating this ability requires a Terastal Orb, which you’ll acquire during the story. This power lasts until the battle ends, or the Pokémon is defeated.
Using this mechanic, a Pokémon’s damage from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) attacks is enhanced. A Terastalized Pokemon will have an amplified STAB bonus only if the attacking move’s type matches one of its original types. If a Water-type Pokemon uses a Water-type attack while Terastalized, the STAB damage bonus is doubled. This dynamic allows for tactical shifts based on the opponent’s types and your team’s available moves.
Wild Tera Encounters and Tera Raids
Encountering Terastalized Pokémon in the wild is a new experience. These Pokémon are clearly marked by an aura, signifying their Terastalized state. You can immediately ascertain their Tera Type without catching them first. Defeating these creatures breaks the transformation, returning them to their original types.

Leaders are unlikely to use a Pokemon whose Tera type doesn’t align with their Gym’s theme.
