
Nintendo Reveals Tears of the Kingdom’s Single Biggest Problem and How It Was Solved
Tears of the Kingdom, a highly praised game, showcases impressive physics and mechanics. However, achieving a fully physics-driven world with the freedom of player interaction proved exceptionally difficult during development. Nintendo, through insights shared at GDC, sheds light on the challenges and the innovative solutions that brought this revolutionary game to life.
An Entirely Physics-Driven World
The core philosophy behind Tears of the Kingdom, and its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, is “multiplicative gameplay,” where actions and objects combine to create endless possibilities. This was further expanded upon in Tears of the Kingdom with the introduction of Ultrahand, enabling players to manipulate objects in unprecedented ways. The early prototypes, however, revealed a significant hurdle. As Senior Director Takuhiro Dohta, Sound Programmer Junya Osada, and Physics Programmer Takahiro Takayama explained, a crucial problem was the instability caused by physics interactions.
- Initially, incorporating all objects into the physics engine led to unpredictable and often problematic outcomes, especially when multiple items interacted simultaneously. Early versions saw bizarre behaviors like horses and carts launching into the air with little prompting, creating chaos during testing.
- The solution was radical: completely removing any non-physics-dependent elements and making everything respond to physics. This meant rewriting the foundation of how certain objects, like gates, interacted with Ultrahand. This fundamental shift was pivotal in establishing a robust and stable environment.
This shift unexpectedly unlocked new opportunities. Developers discovered unintended solutions within the game’s puzzles, with Shrines now offering alternative paths to completion that were not initially apparent. These unintended consequences were a testament to the profound effect of embracing a completely physics-driven approach.
A System That Makes Fun Things Happen
Instead of aiming to craft pre-defined fun, Nintendo wanted a system capable of spontaneously generating entertaining interactions. This guiding principle shaped various aspects of the game’s systems, from object movement to sound design and vehicle creation.
- Vehicles were not designed with predetermined behaviors but rather built upon fundamental physics principles. Wheels, steering mechanisms, and various collected components could be combined to create custom vehicles, leading to a truly customizable experience. This collaborative approach required close coordination between physics programmers, artists, and designers to ensure both functional mechanics and aesthetic appeal.
- Sound design also adopted a physics-based approach, creating dynamic and unpredictable audio experiences. Voxel data, a 3D representation of the environment, played a pivotal role in this design. This allowed for sounds to react to the environment, altering based on proximity to water, walls, or other elements. The result was a much more immersive and contextual sound experience.
A key feature of this system was its lack of dedicated implementations. Wagon sounds, for example, weren’t programmed; instead, the sounds were created dynamically by the movement and interactions of the vehicle’s wheels and components. This approach generated novel and unpredictable audio outputs that resonated deeply with players.
The development process for Tears of the Kingdom clearly required innovative solutions to the complex problem of a fully physics-driven world. By removing non-physics items and designing systems that fostered spontaneous interactions, Nintendo created a game where players could interact and discover endless opportunities. The iterative process, guided by the developers’ innovative spirit and keen understanding of player interaction, ultimately led to the remarkable gameplay experience that resonated with millions. This intricate and evolving system made the experience truly unique and engaging, resulting in a title worthy of its accolades.
