The New Quest
The Defender of Varrock quest, a remake of the 2008 version, is the main attraction of the latest Old School RuneScape update. It advances the Mahjarrat storyline and offers an exciting narrative for players to experience.
The quest revolves around the legendary Arrav, a warrior known for his strength and spirit. He defeated a horde of goblins, earning the name “Arrav,” which translates to “the curse of goblins.” Years later, Arrav’s hometown, Varrock, is under threat from the Mahjarrat, led by Zemouregal. Arrav sets out to find a powerful shield to defeat Zemouregal, ultimately sacrificing his life to save his town.
Zemouregal, true to his word, returns with his army, now led by the undead Arrav. Players must embark on a mission to save Varrock and prevent Arrav’s sacrifice from being in vain. This quest promises a thrilling challenge and a significant contribution to the evolving Mahjarrat storyline.

New Weapons and Enemies
The Defender of Varrock quest isn’t just a carbon copy of its 2008 counterpart. Jagex has introduced new elements to keep the experience fresh.
One notable addition is the armored zombies, a more challenging version of the standard zombies. These undead foes require a more strategic approach and offer a greater challenge for players.
The update also introduces a new weapon, the Zombie Axe. This weapon requires a minimum of 65 Attack to wield and needs 70 Smithing to repair when found broken. Though not the most powerful weapon, it serves as a valuable intermediate option, particularly for players who don’t want to spend a fortune on higher-tier weapons.
What else is new?
Beyond the Defender of Varrock quest, the update includes several other notable changes that enhance the gameplay experience.
The Rune Pouch has been improved with the ability to configure up to four different loadouts. This feature allows players to quickly switch between rune combinations, eliminating the need to constantly reconfigure their pouch. This new feature is especially helpful for long journeys and simplifies the overall rune management process.
The Quest Start highlight feature is another notable addition. When enabled in the settings menu, this feature highlights characters and areas that initiate quests. This eliminates the need to manually search for quest-related characters or locations, saving time and streamlining the quest-starting process. However, for players who prefer the mystery of finding quest starters themselves, the option to disable this feature remains available.
The Modern Music Area Mode has been expanded to include areas such as Karamja, Morytania, The Digsite, Fossil Island, Mos Le’Harmless, and Ape Atoll. This expansion provides players with an even wider range of musical landscapes to enjoy. For those who prefer the classic music area modes, they can be accessed from the settings menu.
The update has also addressed a minor annoyance for players who frequently used buckets in the Trouble Brewing quest. The character now automatically pours water from buckets, eliminating the need for constant manual clicks.
Finally, the PvP World Rota has shifted to Period A, with World 390 (AUS) for LMS Competitive activated and World 569 (AUS) for Bounty Hunter deactivated. This change impacts the availability of PvP worlds in the Australian region.
