How Nintendo Switch 2 Will Improve Switch 1 Games
What Games are Playable on Switch 2?
The Nintendo Switch 2 offers a variety of gaming options for players. Three key categories are available. Firstly, there are “Native Switch 2 Games,” developed specifically for the new console and not playable on the original Switch. Secondly, “Compatible Switch 1 Games” are playable directly on the Switch 2 simply by inserting their cartridges. Lastly, “Switch 2 Edition Games” are Switch 1 titles that receive enhancements and extra features when played on the newer console. This approach allows both new and existing players to access a comprehensive game library, while Nintendo is incentivizing Switch 1 owners to experience improvements.
So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?
Switch 2 Edition games aren’t just graphical updates; they bring substantial new content. Think of enhanced resolutions, pushing visuals up to 1440p, or improvements to frame rates. The new editions often include additional minigames and online functionalities. Some even add entire new story content. For instance, certain titles will incorporate mouse support with updated Joy-Con controllers and the new Switch 2 peripherals like a microphone or camera. These additions aim to enhance the player experience with features tailored to the advancements of the new hardware.
When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?
The timeline for the release of Switch 2 Edition games is gradually unfolding. The initial wave of Switch 2 Edition games will arrive alongside the console’s launch on June 5, 2025. Titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will have their Switch 2 editions available from launch. Later releases will follow. For example, Super Mario Party Jamboree‘s enhanced edition, including the new content package “Jamboree TV”, will come out on July 24, 2025. Similarly, Kirby and the Forgotten Land will get its Star-Crossed World add-on as a Switch 2 Edition in August 2025. Titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A have not been given release dates, but are anticipated to be available in 2025. This staggered approach suggests a dedicated effort to bring significant improvements to popular games over time.
How Much Will Switch 2 Editions Cost?
Pricing for Switch 2 Edition games varies. If you don’t own the original Switch game, you’ll purchase the Switch 2 Edition, readily available in physical and digital formats at a price equivalent to the original game. Physical copies have a distinctive red casing and the digital versions display a noticeable Switch 2 logo. For those who already own the Switch 1 version, a separate upgrade pack will be offered, available through various channels like retail stores, the My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop. At this time, specific upgrade costs are unknown. Some upgrade packs, such as the upgrade for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, will be included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. This is the subscription that provides access to online features and the extensive classic game library.
