Blizzard released an update on WOW subscriptions and explained why this expansion failed!

At the Game Developers Conference 2024, Blizzard executives showed off a graph showing the evolution of World of Warcraft subscribers over the past decade. In addition, the developers explained why the Shadowlands expansion disappointed.

Why is the subscription info so special? 

In 2015, Blizzard executives last released official information about World of Warcraft's monthly paying subscribers. At the time, the speedometer stood at 5.5 million WoW subscriptions worldwide.

After that, the quarterly reports only included information on MAUs, i.e. monthly active users, for all Blizzard games. It was no longer possible to draw conclusions about the number of players in the MMORPG.

What does the graph reveal from GDC 2024? 

The slide shown during a panel includes the Legion to Dragonflight expansions. Unfortunately, you can't see how the number of subscribers to Legion and Co. compares to the previous addons or how high the number of subscribers is in the period shown.

But what we can read from the graph:

  • At launch, Legion was able to build more subscribers than the subsequent expansion, Battle for Azeroth (which achieved a record for the fastest-selling expansion).
  • Unsurprisingly, after the launch of Battle for Azeroth, subscription numbers fell faster than during the period of the Legion expansion, to their lowest level in the past eight years.
  • However, with the launch of WoW Classic, Blizzard managed to bring subscription numbers to their highest level since at least 2016.
  • The release of Shadowlands then provided the next high, but the number of subscribers crashed drastically into the basement after that. The developers speak of a "historically high churn" - and this despite Burning Crusade Classic and Wrath of the Lich King Classic.
  • The slide shows that Blizzard had expected a significantly weaker drop in subscription numbers from the two Classic versions after Shadowlands.
  • With Dragonflight, there was an increase again, but the graph ends at a much lower level than was the case in the previous launch phases of expansions.

Are there really no clues to the exact numbers? 

In the financial report for the first quarter of 2017, Blizzard executives stated that Legion's player numbers are slightly higher than the numbers of the previous expansion (via Bellular).

This could lead to the following deductions:

  • The lowest level of subscriptions in Battle for Azeroth may have been around 4 million players.
  • During Shadowlands, the low point was around 4.5 million active players.
  • Bellular assumes that with the current Season of Discovery, subscription numbers have increased so much that 7.25 million players could currently play WoW.
  • At the launch of WoW Classic, about 8.27 million players are believed to have had a subscription. This is in line with the accompanying financial report (more than twice as many players as at the low point of Battle for Azeroth).

The Reasons for the Failure of Shadowlands

In another slide, the developers analyze where the construction sites of the Shadowlands expansion were. They identified a problem with the story and the setting. The Shadowlands were intangible as a setting for players, and the new antagonist was poorly constructed. Popular heroes faded into the background.

However, those responsible also identified weaknesses in the gameplay. The systems did not meet the expectations of the players and there was again a development in character strength that is not relevant for the future (borrowed power). In addition, there was a lack of variety in the content.

Last but not least, the communication with the players was not right. The community felt unheard, the developers weren't transparent enough. There were too many phases without new content.
