The beta of The War Within
The alpha of The War Within was already running, to which only a few people were invited. Here, the areas and features were gradually unlocked.
The beta will start on June 5, 2024. You can register for the beta in the classic way. If you want guaranteed beta access, you can also pre-order the expensive "Epic Edition" of the expansion.
Big features of The War Within
The War Within has only a few big features that may not seem so significant at first glance. However, this is mainly due to the fact that WoW wants to bring more new "evergreen" features that will do the game good for a long time.
Hero Talents
Instead of further inflating the previously known talent trees, each class gets new "hero talents". These are smaller, separate talent trees. Each specialization has a choice of two sets of hero talents, with multiple specializations sharing the same sets.
The Hero talent trees are made to change the way your class plays, and usually significantly improve one or two abilities. At level 80, you have unlocked all the talents of a hero talent tree, although there are some "choice talents" where you have to choose between 2 options.
War Pack
One of the biggest features that fans have been waiting for for years is the "War Packs". This is basically not an actual feature, but a departure from the previous, character-oriented design of the game.
In the future, almost all achievements in the game will be account-bound. Progress in reputation factions ("fame"), achievements, but also the completion of story quests will apply to the entire account.
At the same time, you can send your resources back and forth between characters much easier. This is also possible because of the new War Pack Bank, which offers account-wide space for materials, equipment and more. However, unlocking this bank is expensive and costs a total of over 3 million gold if you really want all the slots.
Delves – The Depths of Azeroth
For fans of outdoor content, there will be the "Delves" in the future. These are something like mini-dungeons that you can find in the open world. Here you fight alongside an NPC (such as Brann Bronzebeard) and explore underground caves for treasure and special loot.
- The Delves can be mastered alone, but you can also go out as a group.
- The Delves are also part of the weekly reward box and are supposed to offer equipment that is roughly on the level of "Mythic+5" or the Heroic raids.
- Delves are only supposed to last 5 to 15 minutes, so they are also suitable for a short session of WoW.
- Delves have multiple difficulty levels, so you can activate better rewards and more challenge.
The New Areas in The War Within
At the start of the expansion, there are 4 new, large areas. 3 of them are underground caves, although they are so spacious and vegetatively varied that you often don't even notice that you are underground.
Isle of Thorn
The island was discovered off the western coast of Pandaria and represents the entry point to the new expansion. Here you will meet the Earthen and their land Khaz Algar. At the same time, the new capital Dornogal is located here, which will be considered the new hub of the expansion for the Alliance and Horde.
The Resounding Depths
The descent into the depths of the planet begins in the Resounding Depths. This is also where earthene, the so-called "machine speakers", live. They use ancient titanic devices to shape the world and stand up to those who stand in the way of the earthen—and there are now some who are pushing up from the depths.
Heilsturz
Heilsturz is illuminated by a giant crystal on the ceiling of the cave. As a result, there is even flowering vegetation and several peoples can survive here. Among them is a splinter group of the Arathi, light-loyal humans who are trapped in the permanent fight against the Nerubians.
Azj-Kahet
Azj-Kahet is the center of the Neruber Kingdom and the center of their culture. This is where Xal'atath has set out to mutate the Nerubians with new powers and thus create an army that cannot be stopped by anyone (until we come by again).
The Story of The War Within
So far, many details of the story are still uncertain, but at least roughly the plot is already known.
All over the world, the inhabitants of Azeroth are beginning to have visions. Many see this as a warning that the World Soul is in danger of being corrupted by the Void.
This is probably exactly the plans of Xal'atath, who is also known as the "Harbinger". This creature in the form of an elf is getting ready to usher in the Age of Void and pave the way for the Void Lords.
To achieve her goals, she even destroys the mage city of Dalaran.
To this end, she recruits the former servants of the Old Gods, the Neruber, and wants to mutate them into even more powerful beings with the blood of the Old Gods. What exact plan she is pursuing is not yet uncertain.
If you don't know who Xal'atath actually is, we've explained her full story here.
In an attempt to get to the bottom of Xal'atath's plans, we fight our way deeper and deeper into the planet and explore the areas mentioned above.
What else is in The War Within?
Apart from the big features, there are of course the "usual suspects" in The War Within, which belong to every expansion. These are classics like new dungeons, but also small changes that are just nice. Includes:
- 8 new dungeons
- Dynamic flying with most of the old flying mounts ("Dragon Riding")
- Transmog unlocks regardless of class played
- Potions that sometimes make you worse
- Engineers are once again building the best (and most useful) items in the game
- You can hide spiders if you suffer from arachnophobia
Even though it may seem at first glance that The War Within doesn't have that much to offer, you should keep in mind that Blizzard has released an extremely large number of patches in a very short time in recent months. There is new content almost every few weeks and this should continue with The War Within.
What are you particularly looking forward to in "The War Within"?
